song highlights

Besides Peter, I didn't know Chicago's lead singers; so I watched a documentary about Terry Kath.  Afterward, I'm searching for recommended songs with his lead vocals because his solo album is about his guitar playing.  On his artist page's songs tab, there's a guitar track, a demo that he composed, and a British trio's reggae track.

However, none of these song highlights were track picks on the respective albums.  So how were these songs selected as highlights?  The British trio is particularly dubious, because they weren't mentioned in his documentary.  Thanks.

I expect you're right on the Reggae track. I think Terry Kath was mistakenly linked as the "Terry" in Terry, Carl & Derrick.

As far as the songs on his individual album goes, they should be showing up under his song highlights and his All Songs view. We'll need to investigate.

Unfortunately the Song Highlights tab and All Songs view only take into account songs where the artist is listed as the Performer, so his songs with Chicago will not display here (even if he is singing lead on them). Similarly, none of Bruce Dickinson's Iron Maiden songs where he is singing lead will show up on his Songs tab, only the songs where he is listed as the performer.

Yes Zac, I would have expected Kath's song highlights to include his solo album.  I assume that it wasn't included because it had no track picks.  But then neither were his song highlights selected as track picks on their respective albums.

If Kath was indeed in the British trio and if that reggae track was indeed a highlight, then I'd have appreciated its inclusion as a song highlight off the V/A box set.

Yeah, something is wrong. The songs from his album should make up the majority of his "Highlights"

The Highlights tab is most useful on artists that have tons of albums and songs, where we can look at track picks, the number of instances of the recording, and other factors to try to bubble up the best of the best, but if an artist only has one album (like The Seahorses) we still fill the Highlights tab with as many songs as we can.

In this case you can see the tracks that are selected have Track Picks bubble up to the top, as well as "Happiness is Eggshaped" which was not a Track Pick but appeared on a number of compilations (indicating some level of interest or popularity).

Terry Kath's Song Highlights page should look a lot more like The Seahorses' Song Highlights page.

I have a ticket open to look into it.

Ok. Figured it out.

Each of the songs on this album are linked to Chicago and not to Terry Kath.

We do some additional work when we try to build out the data to display on the page, and if an album has a linked Primary Artist, we project those down to the track level.

This helps to fill some inconsistencies and missing data and is helpful 99% of the time.
In this instance, this album should probably just be attributed to Chicago since the songs performed on the album are Chicago songs.
